Volunteers planting at the Leigh Community Garden

Leigh Community Garden

About the project

PROJECT TITLE: Leigh Community Garden

LOCATION: Wigan

FUNDING: Awarded £2,336 in Round One of the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund

PARTNERS: The Brick - Queens Hall Action on Poverty

Background

The Brick provides relief and help to homeless families and other persons who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress by offering tailored support, hope, and opportunity to those looking to improve their quality of life.

Their Homeless project in Leigh provides accommodation and support to people transitioning through homelessness. The area currently has no green space for people to spend their time, so the community garden project is reconnecting people with nature and creating a green space where people can come to relax and take time for their well-being.

The idea

To create a green space in a deprived area of Leigh, where locals accessing nearby support services including the homeless shelter and addiction support can come to reflect, relax and learn new skills, including planting and maintaining a garden filled with plants and vegetables all year round.

Making use of a carpark at the back of The Brick's building, the garden will provide a peaceful safe space within a deprived urban area where people accessing local support services can rest, reflect and restore themselves.

Residents and volunteers will be encouraged to create seasonal designs for the garden, with themes that encourage biodiversity and wellbeing. Local schools will be approached to encourage children to submit themed designs, with top points going to those that focus on urban biodiversity.

The aim is for 40 individuals that are engaging with the homeless shelter, local homeless support charity and addiction support service to volunteer and train with our mentors. This will lead to the planting of 60 plants and four evergreen trees, with at least 20 people will receive training and learn skills as part of the gardening project.

The Brick's mentors will support local volunteers and trainees to maintain the garden, including maintaining healthy plants by creating watering, feeding and pruning schedules. Additionally, they will work with volunteers from local services to regularly litter pick and maintain the area.
