The idea
The Manchester Green Pathway project is working to transform an abandoned concrete slip road into a dynamic and thriving green pathway.
They will encourage sustainable methods of transportation by reviving the cycle path route and greening the pedestrian path through a community orchard, raised planter boxes, trees, shrubs and wildflowers. A wheelchair accessible interactive planter garden will be created with space for local residents to grow their own food and start projects like community composting, propagation of plants and environmental education.
The team are also creating a green screen that spans the 300-metre length of the site, comprising of trees and plants that will provide the local community with resources such as bamboo, hazel coppice and willow to build and create environmental projects or even propagated to create more free resources for other projects. In addition, a forest garden will be planted consisting of fruit trees, soft fruits, perennial and low maintenance vegetables, flowers for pollination and wild areas for biodiversity.
