About the project

PROJECT TITLE: Chapelfield Nature Reserve

LOCATION: Bury

FUNDING: Awarded £40,000 in Round Two of the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund

DELIVERED BY: Profitts CiC

The idea

To clean up and improve Chapelfield Nature Reserve to transform the area into a place where local people can enjoy and connect with nature.

The project will look to enhance the nature and biodiversity at the site and clean up litter around the site and in the former allotments. The team will also tackle the aggressive Japanese Knotweed, clear overgrown vegetation, and fell dead and diseased trees so that nature can thrive again. Native woodland and shrubs and a community orchard of heritage apples, plums, damsons and quince will be planted, which will not only add beauty to the site and attract new wildlife, but also allows local people to garden, grow food and pick fruit.

New nature reserve signs will be created through an art project for local children, and the community will be able to get involved in wildflower planting events and pond dipping sessions run by wildlife experts. These fun activities will provide an opportunity for people to learn more about nature and the benefits that green spaces bring for people and the planet.
