About the project

PROJECT TITLE: Sustainable Northmoor by Urban Greening (SNUG)

LOCATION: Manchester

FUNDING: Awarded £40,000 in Round Two of the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund

DELIVERED BY: Longsight Art Space with Friends of Crowcroft Park

The idea

The project aims to provide accessible, quality, green spaces through orchard planting, renovation and greening.

The orchard and plants in the garden will provide habitat for wildlife, and dead and decaying wood will support fungi, lichens, moss and insects. Fruit trees will not only be shelter for wildlife but also provide edible fruit for the community. Bird and bat boxes and bug hotels will give additional spaces to encourage wildlife, and composting bins will provide rich soil to use in the green space. Increasing tree density in the area will also improve air quality and planting will be a communal activity to bring people together and provide tangible way to invest in the community.

The project will also provide opportunities for local residents to build new skills, receive horticultural training and bolster confidence in growing food in urban spaces which is invaluable in this time of food insecurity and climate crisis.
