About the project

PROJECT TITLE: Burnside's Community Garden

LOCATION: Rochdale

FUNDING: Awarded £8,500 in Round One of the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund

PARTNERS: Burnside Centre

Background

Burnside Centre wanted to change the outside of their building from unused and run down to a thriving and accessible community garden space.

The idea

This project will create a community garden space for service users and the local community. This will see planters and wall hangings installed to grow flowers, herbs and food, with an intention of attracting wildlife, and using the food and herbs grown to support the Burnside Centre's food pantry service. The project will be supported by Burnside’s core staff, alongside the recruitment of new volunteers.

The project will engage with all members of the local community, offering a volunteering programme for anyone interested in gardening and growing. Residents and design experts will work together to create a space that adds nature and beauty to the street whilst also being biodiverse and sustainable. Throughout the project volunteers will gain skills and have ownership over the design and day to day running of the space itself. The aim is to create a garden that inspires others, showing that even in a small space there is room for nature and enjoying the outdoors.
