About the project

PROJECT TITLE: Canal Street Community Garden

LOCATION: Stockport

FUNDING: Awarded £3,460 in Round Two of the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund

DELIVERED BY: GRIT Studios

The idea

The Community Garden will form a central, accessible space which local residents can take ownership of and use to grow and nurture plants, socialise, and learn and reconnect with nature and each other.

The space will be designed based on feedback already collected from residents. This will involve building raised beds for fruit and vegetables, installing window boxes, hanging baskets and planted oil drums down the streets, providing seating so people have space to spend time outdoors, and introducing wildlife projects such as building nesting boxes, bug houses, a pond, and wildflower area.

The project will run activities for the local community, including:

  • Gardening groups for residents led by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust with a specific focus on working with young people who may not have had the opportunity to access a green space.
  • A School Holidays Art and Gardening Club run by Grit Studios for local children to create art installations and bird boxes, and grow seeds.
  • BBQ's in the summer for local residents to get together in nature and socialise.
