Highfield Habitats

About the project

PROJECT TITLE: Highfield Habitats

LOCATION: Manchester and Stockport

FUNDING: Awarded £14,999 in Round Two of the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund

DELIVERED BY: The Friends of Highfield Park

The idea

The project will build on the longstanding work already carried out by The Friends of Highfield Park to protect and enrich the park and increase its accessibility.

Community engagement will be a big focus of the project and regular events will be held to attract people to the park to connect with nature and each other. Events will include monthly nature walks delivered by experts, biodiversity talks and BioBlitz sessions in collaboration with Manchester Museum, and coppice events.

The project will also train volunteers to establish a coppiced area to let light into wooded areas and increase biodiversity. Hazel harvested can be used as a renewable resource for items such as fences, plant supports and bush crafts. Volunteers will also plant seeds and bulbs in the coppiced area.
