About the project

PROJECT TITLE: Chorlton Park Sponge Meadow

LOCATION: Manchester

FUNDING: Awarded £22,903 in Round Five of the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund

DELIVERED BY: Friends of Chorlton Park (FoCP)

The idea

The group will transform an area of Chorlton Park which suffers from flooding during wet periods, resulting in restricted access through the park and a loss of connection.

They will achieve this by creating a 'sponge meadow'; a seasonally adaptable habitat that can collect excess water and help tackle the current climate and biodiversity emergencies.

The outcome will be year-round accessibility for the community and the creation of a unique habitat space to increase biodiversity within Chorlton. The Friends group will engage people, focusing on the most deprived areas, in the design and development of the space to increase people's understanding and appreciation of nature.
