The Secret Garden Allotment

About the project

PROJECT TITLE: The Secret Garden Allotment

LOCATION: Rochdale

FUNDING: Awarded £11,749 in Round Two of the Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund

DELIVERED BY: Back of the Moss Community Centre

The idea

The Secret Garden Allotment will create a space where the local community can come together to plant seeds and nurture and harvest home grown vegetables to take home to cook with. The project will also encourage children to get involved in growing fruit and vegetables and provide knowledge for them to take into adulthood and pass on to future generations. It will also enable the community to be healthier, save money, meet new people, become more self-sufficient and reduce waste by turning excess fruit and veg into chutneys, jams and soups. There is also a large lawn on site where community gatherings and picnics will be hosted.

Volunteers will support with initial clearing of rubbish and weeds and trimming undergrowth so garden membrane can be laid and topped with bark. Raised beds will be built and filled with soil for pear, cherry, plum and apple trees to be planted. Bird boxes, hedgehog houses and bug hotels and a pond will be introduced to boost biodiversity in the area.
