Single-Use Carrier Bag Charge

A 5p charge for all plastic bags was introduced in the UK in 2015, rising to 10p in 2021, to encourage people to reuse plastic bags to prevent the damage to the environment that they can cause. The charge does not go to the government and retailers are expected to give proceeds to good causes of their choosing, preferably benefitting an environmental cause. Since the scheme was introduced, the number of bags used in England has reduced by more than 95% and the charges have raised almost £180m for good causes.

How carrier bag charges can support nature and communities across Greater Manchester

The Greater Manchester Environment Fund (GMEF) is investing in nature, creating jobs, and boosting health and wellbeing across our region. By donating your carrier bag charge proceeds to us, you can help us to create a brighter, greener future for Greater Manchester.

Funds donated to GMEF can be used to support community-led projects across Greater Manchester that are working to improve the region for both nature and people. Many of these projects are working to create and improve green space, particularly in the places where people need it the most. Thriving natural spaces can help us to tackle the impacts of climate change, reduce flood risk, improve air quality and provide space for wildlife. Time spent in them also enables people to reconnect with nature and benefits physical and mental health.

An added bonus of choosing to support GMEF is that the projects benefitting from your donation are also benefitting the area that your employees live and work in. Your staff can visit the sites where the projects are taking place for corporate volunteer days or just to spend time outdoors and enjoy being surrounded by nature. You can also show your customers that you are investing in Greater Manchester’s future.

If you would like to meet with our team to discuss this opportunity, you can get in touch with us by e-mailing gmenvfund@lancswt.org.uk, or click here to find out more about the types of projects that your donation can support.
